I like soap operas.
I liked them when I was a kid, possibly because I relate them to summer vacations. Also because my grandma watched them, though she called them her "stories," which is so cute.
I liked them in college. My junior year, my roommate had a break in classes at just the right time to catch General Hospital. We were WAY into it. It was right when Lucky and Liz had just gotten together and Helena was evil and tricked everyone into thinking Lucky died when his apartment caught fire cause he left a candle burning and there were tears and possibly a funeral but it turned out he wasn't dead at all, just being held prisoner! I know. Yall can go ahead and try to find those episodes online or something. I know you're totally interested.
Sadly, once you enter the so-called real world and have a normal 9-5 job (sidenote: does anyone actually work 9-5? I'd like to meet you and possibly apply at your company if you do), you can't really watch the soaps. So I lost track of who was doing whom, whose wife was actually his sister, who had brain damage, and who was whose baby daddy.
But lo! Last June, I had the unfortunate experience of getting laid off (and by "unfortunate" I mean "SERIOUSLY FUCKING FORTUNATE" because my job made me miserable), and since I didn't have cable, I got reacquainted with my soaps. Disclaimer: I wasn't just sitting around all day watching soaps, yall. I was job searching. But you know you have to have SOMETHING on in the background, right? Cut me a break here. Anyway, know what I realized? You can totally walk away from soaps for years, but once you start back it takes approximately 20 minutes to figure out what's going on. A lot of the characters are the same, and while the storylines change, there's a familiar theme running through the shows. It's like no matter how much time you've missed, you can pick back up like *that*.
It's kind of like friendships. Even though you're away from the people you love for months or even years, once you're back together, you're back together.
(Guys, I totally don't know one of the girls in this last picture. But you get the point.)

I used to have that relationship with Days of Our Lives. I'd get really into it, then not watch for 6 months and then one day I'd be home sick and suddenly it's like: Oh Marlena - you're in mortal peril - AGAIN. Plus, do you notice that soap actors always come back? It's like they haven't acted on the show for 10 years but they must run out of money or something and so suddenly Steve and Kayla are back in Salem. Sadly - I caught a bit of Days on SoapNet a while back and I think it truly has gotten to the point where there has been so much turnover, I truly don't know what's going on.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Awesome. So my story was Guiding Light and there is definitely no getting back in to that now. *tear*
I was all about One Life to Live. That show had a history of casting guys who went on to be musicians.
And awww to old friendships.
